The Girls’ Prefect of Ewutu Winton senior high school, Hannah Agyemang, has boldly questioned the leadership structure of secondary schools in Ghana, in a recent interview with Joy News anchor, Israel Laryea.
The eloquent Girls’ Prefect has vehemently challenged the concept of leadership in schools, whereby the boys are mostly given the higher positions as compared to their fellow girls. She cited an example of the situation in her school which depicts that, though they have both boys and girls prefects, it’s quite obvious that the boys prefect is automatically the overall school prefect as well as the chairman of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and that does not augur well in the context of gender equality.
When asked of the changes she would like to see in terms of leadership in schools, she suggested a portfolio should be created for school prefects, whereby the students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite candidate to be the overall school prefect, regardless of the gender of the person.
In response to a follow up question about whether she thinks the boys will vote for her if she contested for the overall school prefect position, she admitted that it might not be possible because society has created the notion that there’s no way a guy will vote for you and the girls too are not so supportive of each other.
The outspoken Girls’ Prefect added that, when this advocacy for change in leadership concept of schools succeeds, it will go a long way to balance the gender equation and make the females feel as relevant as their fellow male counterparts, in all aspects of our lives.
